A LETTER TO THE READER

IN THE BEGINNING IT WAS ALL ABOUT BUILDING WORLDS FOR BRANDS. SOMETIMES, WE’D INCORPORATE 2D GRAPHICS, OTHER TIMES 3D CHARACTERS, SOMETIMES A HYBRID OF THE TWO.  ALWAYS, OUR WORK WAS BASED ON DESIGN, CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING AND SERVICING THE STORY IN WAYS THAT ONLY WE COULD. OFTEN WE INVENTED TECHNIQUES AND CUTTING EDGE IDEAS THAT BECAME OUR SIGNATURE STYLE.

THE METHOD OF PRODUCTION WAS VARIABLE BASED ON WHAT WE NEEDED TO CREATE - USING SOFTWARE IN WAYS NEVER BEFORE SEEN IN THE MOTION GRAPHICS WORLD. IT MEANT WE CONSTANTLY REINVENTED OURSELVES. IN A GOOD WAY. BECAUSE OF THIS DYNAMIC VARIABILITY, AGENCIES AND BRANDS WOULD COME TO US TO SEE WHAT WE COULD INVENT FOR THEM.

IN RECENT YEARS, PSYOP HAS BEEN VIEWED BY MANY, OUTSIDE OF ITS PARAMETERS, AS ‘JUST AN ANIMATION STUDIO’. BUT THAT’S NOT ACCURATE. WE’RE A STUDIO THAT CHOSE TO MAKE ANIMATION AND KICKED ASS DOING THAT. WE CRAFT EVERY PIXEL, AND WE GOT PRETTY DAMN GOOD AT BUILDING 3D WORLDS AND MEMORABLE CHARACTERS TO POPULATE THEM. I THOUGHT IT WAS THE END FOR STOP MOTION, BUT ALMOST 20 YEARS LATER WITH ALL THE CAPABILITY IMPROVEMENTS TO CGI, IT IS STILL NOT EVEN CLOSE TO THE END.

VICTOR: STOP MOTION IS VERY OFTEN SEEN AS SOMETHING CUTE/NOSTALGIC. I THINK IT CAN BE PUNK TOO. FIRST OF ALL, TO REMOVE THE CHEESINESS, YOU MUST AVOID VIOLIN OR ACCORDION MUSIC. THEN ADD A LITTLE FUN AND A BIT OF DARK HUMOR. I TRY TO TREAT EACH IDEA SPONTANEOUSLY AND ANIMATE AS I GO RATHER THAN FOCUSING ON THE FINAL AIM.

THE ACTORS SHOULD FEEL TOTALLY REAL SO LET’S AVOID ANYTHING PRE-MADE OR FROZEN.  MIX IT UP PERFECTLY AND COOK  WITH SOME DYNAMIC CAMERA MOTION, SOME FLUTTER CUTS TO THE BEAT, AND VOILA! DREAM BRIEF #1. I’VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT HOW COOL OF AN AD WE COULD CREATE FOR ONE OF THOSE NEW HIGH TECH MUSHROOM GROW KITS. MUSHROOM PUPPETS SINGING ABOUT THE FINER POINTS OF ALL THINGS MYCOLOGICAL. GET SOME LAST OF US VIBES IN THERE AS WELL. A COOL MUSIC TRACK WITH THAT CLICKING SOUND WOULD BE SO COOL.
DREAM BRIEF #2.  A GLOSSY BUT WEIRD AS HELL TOURIST SPOT FOR ART BASEL. THINK MATHEW BARNEY MEETS CARNIVAL CRUISES. WE WOULD NEED SOME IRONIC FIRE FESTIVAL / MODELS ON YACHTS, BUT THE YACHTS WOULD BE DESIGNED BY ERWIN WURM AND THE MODELS WOULD BE ARTISTS, WRITERS, AND THINKERS LOOKING CONFUSED.
DREAM BRIEF #3. I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO MAKE AN INSANELY STRANGE, FUN AND UNEXPECTED SKITTLES VIDEO GAME. AN EVEN WEIRDER WARIOWARE. A SERIES OF EXTREMELY UNUSUAL SHORT GAMES THAT TAKE CUES FROM PAST SPOTS; WHAT FLAVOR IS THAT COMING DOWN TUBE, YOGURT BOY SKITTLE DIP, MOUTH HOSE POWER WASH, ETC… IT COULD BE SO FRIGGIN' AMAZING. WE’VE HAD SOME GOOD FORTUNE WITH THE DATING SIMS WE’VE CREATED BUT THERE’S JUST SO MUCH MORE WE CAN BE DOING WITHIN THE GAME SPACE. IT’S SO RIPE AND READY FOR INVENTION.
